Most teenagers are thinking about high school. Benyamin Bamburac is finishing a master’s degree.
The 15-year-old will graduate from Lewis University in Romeoville on Friday with a master’s degree in computer science. He is the youngest person ever to graduate from the university with a bachelor’s and master’s degree.
“I am excited,” Benyamin said to NBC Chicago. “My parents would accompany me to classes because I cannot drive. They had to be there. There’s a lot of homework, a lot of expectations. I am glad I am graduating.”
Benyamin’s father said he started doing calculus at age 5. He began his studies at Lewis University when he was 12 and earned two bachelor’s degrees last year.
“The age difference didn’t really matter in classes,” Benyamin said. “Because we had the same lectures, the same homework. It really sort of eliminates the age differences.”
He will receive his diploma Friday at Lewis University’s graduation.
“He did everything by himself. We just supported him, but this was all him,” said his father, Djordje Bamburac.
“He is a very studious kid, humble and prayerful,” said his mother, Sally Lou Flores Bamburac. “I am amazed and so proud.”
Benyamin said he likes spending time with friends and family, playing chess, programming and watching videos in his free time.
“Right now, he has no idea about what he wants to do. He just wants to rest, but I think down the road he’s going to invent something,” said his father.
