At this Sacramento gas station, some customers come for fuel and leave talking about cinnamon rolls.
An ARCO station on Sutterville Road has become a destination for customers looking for fresh cinnamon rolls. Bobby Singh starts work early each morning, preparing dough for the store’s popular baked goods.
“We get in, dough, ovens,” Singh told KOVR.
The store has sold fresh Sutterville cinnamon rolls using the same recipe for 30 years, even as ownership and the gas station’s name have changed. Singh has made the dough for the rolls for three years.
The bakery offers three types, including a regular roll without walnuts.
“Regular is one without walnuts,” Singh told KOVR.
Singh said he knows the recipe by heart.
“We add flour, then yeast, whole wheat, then brown sugar, salt, butter, margarine, cinnamon and buttermilk, water, eggs,” he told KOVR.
Customer Terry Maxwell told KOVR the cinnamon rolls are among the best in the area.
“They’re fantastic, one of the best in the area. I came in here to get gas, saw cinnamon rolls,” Maxwell told KOVR.
Singh told KOVR the store sold 500 cinnamon rolls in one day during Thanksgiving.
“500 in one day at Thanksgiving,” he told KOVR.
The gas station bakery also sells muffins and cookies. Singh told KOVR that cookies take 11 to 12 minutes to bake. When asked about his favorite item to make, Singh told KOVR, “All are good.”
Customers told KOVR they enjoy the neighborhood spot, which is near the Sacramento Zoo and Fairytale Town.
“I love it, spreading the word,” one customer told KOVR.
