A frightening fall inside a Beaverton apartment turned into a rescue led by a 4-year-old.

On April 17, Nova Hallett was at home with her grandmother, Charlene, and her baby brother when Charlene fell, hit her head, became disoriented and started bleeding.

Nova ran outside the apartment to find help. After spotting a neighbor, she said her grandmother had fallen. The neighbor called 911.

When officers arrived, police said Nova was calm and focused. She led them to the apartment, and because the door was unlocked, they were able to get inside quickly and assess Charlene’s condition.

Paramedics took Charlene to a nearby hospital. She spent about a week recovering before returning home.

Nova’s mother, Haley Rose, said she was stunned by what her daughter had done.

“What 4-year-old knows how to do that?” Rose said.

Rose said Nova understood that she had helped save her grandmother.

“We told her, ‘She’s in the hospital. She’s getting help. You helped her. She said, ‘Okay, I saved Grandma!’ She felt really, really proud.”

Beaverton Police Public Information Officer Matt Henderson said Nova’s actions mattered.

“Nova demonstrated an incredible level of bravery and awareness, especially for someone so young,” Henderson said. “Her ability to recognize an emergency, seek help, and guide first responders to her grandmother undoubtedly made a difference in the outcome.”

The Beaverton Police Department plans to nominate Nova for a community life-saving award.
