Stray Dog’s Microchip Reunites Him With Family More Than 7 Years After Disappearing

Seven years is a long time to wait for a dog to come home. For one Louisiana family, that wait ended when a shelter scanned a stray dog for a microchip and realised he was Champ.

WBRZ reported that Champ was first adopted as a puppy from Companion Animal Alliance in Baton Rouge in 2016, according to a Facebook post from the shelter.

About three years later, Champ disappeared. His family did not see him again until he returned to the same shelter as a stray.

Companion Animal Alliance said Champ’s family had spent more than seven years without knowing what had happened to him.

That changed when shelter staff checked Champ for a microchip, identified his family and contacted them.

Companion Animal Alliance said Champ’s family came over as soon as they learned he had been found.

“There were tears, hugs, phone calls to family members, and an emotional reunion years in the making,” the shelter wrote on Facebook. “It was a reminder that even after all this time, hope wasn’t lost.”

The shelter urged pet owners to keep microchip details current.

“If your pet isn’t microchipped, or if your contact information has changed, take a few minutes to update it today,” Companion Animal Alliance wrote in its post. “You never know when that tiny chip could make all the difference.”
