A lost wallet has turned up more than 30 years after its owner had no idea it was missing.
Among the items inside was a Leeds United membership card from the 1992-93 Premier League season, when sports reporter Mark Dexter covered the club for the Yorkshire Evening Post.
Dexter used to live in Rawdon, where the wallet was found, and said he was a regular in the local pub scene. But he told the BBC he does not remember losing a wallet and does not know how it ended up there.
The wallet was found by Claire Wilson, who runs a local forest school. Dexter said: “but I’ve no recollection of ever walking down there at any time in the past, so I’ve no idea how it’s got there.”
He said one theory was that it may have been stolen after a night when he had “more than his fair share of brews”, possibly while he was at a cricket match.
Wilson posted images of the wallet’s contents on Facebook and asked if anyone could identify the person shown on the Leeds United card.
The card was issued at the start of the season after Leeds had won the English title ahead of Manchester United.
“Given that I was a sports reporter, you would have thought I would have had more of a smile on my face on the Leeds card,” Dexter told the BBC.
Dexter’s wife saw the Facebook post, and the couple went to collect the wallet.
Wilson said the spot where she found it had once been a private garden and had also been linked to a nearby hotel.
She found the wallet in weeds while cutting them back during a community project run through the forest school.
For Dexter, now 63, the find brought back memories of that period in his life.
“In ’92 I was 30 and happy, having a good time, loving journalism, loving working in newspapers. It was just great.”
