At Madison Meadows Middle School in North Central Phoenix, a class project is reaching well past the school grounds.
And it’s all thanks to Ms. Megan Tracy and Mrs. Elizabeth Cohen, advisors for the National Junior Honor Society at the school.
Their NJHS Community Service Project Showcases seventh and eighth-grade students who shared work they had done after spending months researching issues they care about.
Students made calls, connected with local organisations, collected donations and created projects aimed at helping others.
The work focused on community needs, including suicide prevention, breast cancer awareness, inclusion, sustainability and food insecurity.
Some students collected food for St. Vincent de Paul. Others created care packages for people experiencing homelessness.
The projects gave students a chance to practise leadership, outreach, teamwork and empathy skills.
“It makes me feel warm inside just to see them that happy,” eighth-grader Hadley Parnell said.
“And I am hoping it goes on and on after this,” eighth-grader Lily Marx said.
