It is an old street fix with a very specific sound in mind. In Ybor City near Tampa Bay, 7th Avenue is being re-bricked in a project meant to bring back its historic look and slow traffic for pedestrians.
Contractors have sourced about 60,000 bricks made with local clay for the work. The street was lined with bricks for decades before asphalt replaced them in the 1960s.
Local business and community leaders said they had been pushing for the change for 10 years. They said the project would make the area safer and encourage more people to visit downtown Ybor.
The bricks being used were made as far back as 100 years ago. Crews will lay each one by hand and then level the road so it is accessible for scooters and cyclists.
Ybor was founded in 1886 by cigar manufacturers and was populated almost entirely by immigrants from Cuba, Italy and Spain.
The project was slated to begin on April 16 and finish in early May. Shops and sidewalks will remain open during the work.
