For Simon Burke, learning to do his daughter’s hair turned into what he called a “massive confidence boost”.
Burke was one of 24 dads who attended Pitches and Ponytails in Wolverhampton, a course teaching fathers simple techniques to style their daughters’ hair.
He said he had never signed up for anything like it before, but his partner encouraged him to take part.
“It was a well worthwhile evening and really interesting to learn new things, and I’ve been applying what I’ve learnt,” he said.
“Dads seem much more involved in things now and it’s good.”
“I could do a ponytail but not to the level that they showed us, so to learn more was really great.”
The event was organised by the Wolves Foundation, a charity attached to the city’s football club, which said it wanted to inspire confidence among those taking part.
Jade Sutton from the foundation said the class sold out, which was “quite a surprise”.
“Speaking to some of the dads, as I have, it’s something that’s very much needed and gives them a bit more confidence, especially around the morning routine.”
She said the focus was on basic haircare and styling tips, “nothing too taxing”.
Sutton said haircare could be “quite traumatic” for some dads, but the class “gave them confidence”.
“One dad said they couldn’t wait to get home and do their daughter’s hair.”
