Sometimes the smallest lunch-table moment is the one people remember.
A Georgia middle school student is getting attention online after he chose to spend lunch with a grandmother who was dining alone at a Chick-fil-A in Ringgold, Georgia.
The student has since been identified as Alex, a 13-year-old seventh-grader at Ringgold Middle School in Catoosa County.
According to the woman’s granddaughter, Morgan, her grandmother was eating alone around 3 p.m. during a school trip stop when Alex approached her table and asked if she was by herself.
When she told him she was, he replied, “Well, you’re not eating alone now.”
Instead of sitting with classmates, Alex spent the rest of his lunch talking with her.
Morgan later shared the interaction online while trying to identify the student, describing him as a “curly-haired seventh grader” from Georgia traveling with a group of 7th and 8th grade students, possibly headed to Washington, D.C.
“In 2026, behavior like this should win an award,” Morgan wrote. “Those parents deserve all the kudos in the world.”
After the story spread online, Alex was identified as the student behind the moment.
His family said he has long been fascinated by people’s stories and examples of compassion.
They said he enjoys studying American history, especially World War II, and looks up to Desmond Doss, the combat medic known for rescuing dozens of soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa.
Alex’s parents said they were surprised by the attention the story received, but not by their son’s empathy toward a stranger.
The woman’s family said the interaction left a lasting impact, adding that the grandmother has been “on cloud nine” ever since the lunch conversation.
