After 18 years of trying to make it happen, Christian Bale has opened a foster care village in Palmdale, California, aimed at keeping brothers and sisters together.
Bale joined Dr. Eric Esrailian and community leaders for the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Together California’s first foster care village, according to Fox 11 News.
The $22 million project includes 12 fully furnished homes across six duplexes. Each home is designed for sibling groups of up to six children.
The village is built to feel like a neighborhood, with a central community garden, recreational areas and a community center where children can play, learn and grow together.
Each home will have a full-time, professionally trained foster parent so siblings can stay together while receiving support.
Bale said his reason for focusing on children in foster care was straightforward.
“If you’ve got a heart, little human beings need help. They’re alone in the world.”
He said the project had been a long time coming.
“18 years in the making since the first idea of how to do it,” Bale said. “So it will be absolutely extraordinary when we come and see that central communal garden just full of kids playing.”
During an interview, a Fox 11 reporter asked Bale, “Batman to the rescue?”
“It wasn’t until a few years after I started this that I realized Bruce Wayne started an orphanage at the end of the movies,” he responded.
