It started beside Chicago train tracks, with one big dog and one little dog sticking close. Now Bird and Dee have been adopted, and they are staying together.
Bird, a chihuahua short coat and pug mix, and Dee, a German shepherd, went viral last week after they were found together and taken to the Anti-Cruelty Society. Four days ago, they were living in a cage there after surviving as strays.
“When I saw them, I was completely melted,” said Claire McKeveny, the dogs’ new owner.
McKeveny said she saw the bonded pair on social media and felt they would fit her family.
“We were very pragmatic, we have two young children, and we didn’t want to give these two a home that wouldn’t be what they deserve, but it just felt right,” she stated.
The dogs have now settled into their new home together. Bird and Dee still cozy up to each other, and Bird likes to sleep right on top of her big brother.
Their new home comes with pets, snuggles and treats from four people.
“I knew what they had was special and for zero reason, under any circumstance, should they ever be broken apart,” said Evan Dunlap, the dogs’ other owner.
Bird and Dee are believed to be about one year old, possibly younger. McKeveny said the dogs seem at ease in their new home.
“You can tell they are really relieved,” McKeveny said.
The family said Bird and Dee became Chicago celebrities over the weekend. While out on walks, people recognised them from social media and stopped to pet them and offer words of gratitude and happiness.
