At Cayuga Medical Center, staff are used to surprises, but January 31 delivered a pair of newborns who couldn’t have been more different.
Terrica and Shawn arrived expecting a big baby. They just didn’t expect this big. Their son, Shawn Jr., weighed in at 13 pounds, earning the title of the largest baby ever born at the hospital. “We knew he’d be bigger, but we didn’t expect this,” Terrica told People. “He’s already wearing three to six-month diapers and clothes. It feels like I skipped straight to having a 3-month-old.”
A few hours later, in the very same maternity ward, Chloe and Victor welcomed their baby — just 4 pounds, the complete opposite in size but no less healthy or celebrated. Chloe called the experience “really charming” and praised the staff for the way they handled everything from the delivery to the tiniest newborn details.
The side-by-side births quickly became a talking point among the team, highlighting how dramatically newborns can vary. Robyn Torgalski, system director of maternal child health at Centralus Health, put it simply: “These two births are a wonderful reminder that every baby and every birth story is unique. Whether a newborn weighs 4 pounds or 13, our teams are prepared to provide the highest level of care to both baby and family.”
Hospital staff said the back-to-back deliveries were also a quiet endorsement of their readiness for anything — from outfitting a 13-pound newborn in clothes meant for older infants to tending to a baby small enough to fit in the crook of a hand.
Both families went home with healthy babies and the kind of story that nurses say they’ll be retelling for years, proof that no two arrivals are ever the same.
