A U-Haul full of diapers is not the kind of delivery a food bank expects from a 12-year-old, but that is what turned up in Phoenix after Sloan wrapped up her fifth annual diaper drive.
Sloan, 12, has organised the drive every year since she was 7. This year, she set a goal of 22,500 diapers.
The donations kept coming, including Huggies, Pampers and Blueys, until there was hardly any room to walk around in her house.
By the end of the drive, Sloan had collected 30,000 disposable diapers for Nourish Phoenix, a food and clothing bank where she volunteered years earlier.
While stocking food parcels at Nourish Phoenix at 510 on 9th Avenue, Sloan noticed a section of shelves was bare. When she asked why, she was told the space was where the diapers were, that they were among the most requested items, and that they had already run out.
“If we have the ability to give someone something that they might not have or need, it’s really important to do that,” Sloan said in an interview with ABC 15 as the drive concluded at the end of August.
“My little girl: she’s just so special, she has such a big heart, loves helping and giving back,” Sloan’s mother said.
