A dog left at a shelter overnight with a fake name and a hidden wound is now training to comfort children in hospital.
Olive arrived at Animal Friends of the Valleys after a couple used the shelter’s overnight drop-off and gave false identities. In a YouTube video by creator Rocky Kanaka, workers found a major wound hidden under duct tape and clothing.
Staff first thought Olive had been surrendered in a routine case. They grew concerned when they realised the tape and clothing were covering a serious injury that had not been treated.
The shelter arranged emergency surgery to address the wound. Rancho Coastal Humane Society carried out the operation.
Olive then recovered at Flip’s Farm, where she continued healing physically and emotionally. In Rocky Kanaka’s YouTube video, Olive is shown running in the yard in the rain for the first time, with Kanaka saying “her reaction to that rain just makes my heart sing.”
She was later placed with a forever family and is now being prepared for a service role expected to comfort children during difficult hospital stays.
Olive’s case shows a problem shelters face often, animals arriving with serious untreated conditions after neglect or abandonment. Her injury was hidden carefully enough that it was not immediately visible, highlighting the role of shelter workers, veterinarians and rescue staff in identifying cases of neglect.
Her survival involved several organisations. Animal Friends of the Valleys identified the emergency and arranged help, Rancho Coastal Humane Society provided the surgery, Flip’s Farm handled rehabilitation, and her adoptive family gave her a permanent home.
Olive is now training for work aimed at helping comfort children in hospital.
