This 12-Year-Old Girl Just Saved Her Friend from Drowning Near a Beach

A day at the beach turned terrifying in Conwy, Wales, when a 12-year-old girl pulled her friend from the water by grabbing a fistful of her hair.

The BBC reported the coastguard was alerted after three teenagers were cut off from Pensarn beach by the tide during a late-May heat wave. Rescue crews were mobilised and on their way when two of the girls lost their footing and were “dragged under.”

At the moment 14-year-old Sofia-Ann’s head went below the water, she appears to have had an epileptic seizure. Her friend Tamika reached out, grabbed Sofia-Ann’s hair, the only part of her she could reach, and dragged her out of the water and back to the beach.

Sofia-Ann was taken to hospital, where seawater had to be drained from her lungs. She survived.

The cause of the seizures, which continued in the ambulance, is being investigated.

“I’m so grateful for Tamika. She put herself in more danger to save Sofia-Ann, she’s my little hero,” Sofia-Ann’s mother, Jade McKenna, said.

“It was quite a shock,” Tamika’s mother Shantika said.

“Tamika got dragged under as well but she still focused on Sofia and getting her out of the water.”
