A North Texas family came frighteningly close to tragedy, and a 7-year-old boy is being credited with stopping it.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said Patrick has been nominated for a rare Sheriff’s Commendation Award after saving his 1-year-old brother, Liam, from a backyard swimming pool in Burleson.

Deputies and paramedics were dispatched to a home on Ketron Road on Sunday, June 21, after Liam fell into the residential pool and became unresponsive, authorities said.

Emergency responders found the toddler unresponsive when they arrived. First responders stabilized him at the scene before taking him to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth.

Sheriff’s officials said Tuesday that Liam is expected to make a full recovery.

During the investigation, deputies learned Patrick saw his younger brother in the water, pulled him out of the pool, alerted his mother, and then ran to a neighboring house to get additional help, according to the sheriff’s office.

“In moments of crisis, even adults can freeze under pressure,” Lt. Keven George said in a statement. “Patrick did the opposite. He remained focused, acted with urgency, and demonstrated a level of courage, awareness, and determination far beyond his years.”

Deputies have formally nominated Patrick for a Sheriff’s Commendation Award, and the Sheriff’s Office Awards Committee will review the nomination at its next meeting. If approved, Patrick will receive a formal commendation and pin.

“His selflessness, courage, and love for his little brother serve as a powerful reminder that heroes come in all ages and sizes,” George said.
