A Spider-Man suit turned up in traffic camera footage in Jonesboro this week, but the man inside it said the costume had nothing to do with why he stopped.
Christopher Hellenthal, 20, said he had just clocked out of work at a trampoline park in Jonesboro on Tuesday when he saw a man in a wheelchair struggling.
“That morning we had a superhero day, and so I brought it for the toddlers, and they had a blast,” Hellenthal said about the Spider-Man costume.
“And whenever I got off work and clocked out, I was actually just going to head into town and just kind of drive around with the suit. And I noticed that there was this man, and he was in a wheelchair, and he was having a lot of trouble, he wasn’t going to make it.”
Hellenthal said he got out quickly and helped the man get to safety.
“But I just got out real fast, and I just helped him along, adrenaline pumping through me. I just told the man, I said, ‘don’t worry I got you,’ and I guess he understood, and I got him to a safe spot, and I made it back to my vehicle and just drove off,” he said.
“I would have done it with or without the suit,” Hellenthal also said.
The moment was filmed by traffic cameras and later shared on the Jonesboro Police Department’s Facebook page. The department called Hellenthal a “true superhero.”
“We were able to spot this little web of kindness on our intersection cameras. Thank you, sir, for helping this gentleman reach his destination safely,” police said.
Sally Smith, a police department spokesperson, told The Associated Press: “Not in my 7 years in the department have I witnessed this.”
Hellenthal lives in Lake City, east of Jonesboro, and said he has always been a Spider-Man fan. He told the AP he had the opportunity to meet the late Stan Lee, one of the character’s co-creators.
Packy Magel, a manager at Ultimate Air Trampoline Park who works with Hellenthal, said he recognised him in the video despite the costume.
It’s “very much like him to do something like that and very much like him to be still in costume,” Magel said to the AP.
