Soldier Reunites With Sister at Liberty Hill Football Game After 16 Months Apart in Surprise Homecoming

It started like any other football game for Elin Brooks in Liberty Hill, until a hand on her shoulder changed everything.

Caden Brooks surprised his sister during a break in the game, marking their first reunion in 16 months. Brooks, a combat engineer diver in the 169th Engineer Brigade, arranged the moment while Elin was cheering for her Liberty Hill team.

Elin believed her brother was still deployed. When she turned around and saw him, she was left momentarily speechless.

“I was in shock. I thought I was just having a normal conversation with my coach,” she said after realizing her brother was home.

Caden said the long wait made the reunion hit even harder.

“It just means a whole lot. I was really hoping I was able to come see her and I got my leave approved, so I’m super excited to come do this for her,” he said.

As he walked over to Elin, he said the emotion was immediate.

“My heart was just pounding. I was just excited,” he said.
