A piece of the World Trade Center is now part of Houston’s story.
The Houston Fire Museum this week dedicated a memorial featuring two steel beams recovered from Ground Zero after the September 11 attacks in 2001.
The museum partnered with Jerry Rubenstein, chairman of Texas Pipe and Supply, to bring the World Trade Center steel from New York to Texas on a flatbed truck.
“Everyone knows about 9/11,” Rubenstein said. “I think it was just a world tragedy, and so that’s what were just trying to do, is leave some footprints of what went on and remind people how lucky we are in this country and not to forget those people who lost their lives.”
The Houston Fire Museum said it hopes the memorial will serve as a place for reflection and remembrance, and as an educational bridge for younger generations who did not experience 9/11 firsthand.
“What it means to us, having this here, it is a reminder of what our country is made of, what our fire service is made of, what our first responders are made of,” Houston Fire Department Chief Thomas Munoz said. “It is also a reminder that when we say we will never forget, we mean that. This memorial will go on for decades and centuries.”
