A garbage bin slipped off a truck in Milwaukee, and that accident saved a dog’s life.
City of Milwaukee sanitation worker Naz Nalls and his partner Omar were on their usual rounds in April when a bin they were emptying fell off the truck before its contents could be dumped and crushed.
“Usually, it don’t fall off. That’s what’s crazy about this. I feel like it was kind of destiny,” Nalls said.
When the bin hit the ground, the workers found a dog inside. The animal was severely underweight, in rough shape, and friendly with people.
The crew contacted their supervisor, Alex Halverson, who was already on his way to check on that team.
“The first time I pulled him out of the garbage can, he did this. He let me pick him up,” Halverson said.
Halverson said the dog was so hungry he gave him the two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches he had packed for lunch.
“He didn’t even chew. He just inhaled,” he said.
Halverson contacted Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission and drove the dog there himself instead of waiting for someone else to pick him up.
The dog later went into foster care through standard shelter procedures. Halverson was then given the first chance to adopt him.
He did, and named the dog PJ after the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
“God knows what he went through. And the fact that obviously he was in a garbage can, purposefully discarded. He was buried under garbage, and the fact that he was still super friendly.”
