A cry for help at an Indiana flood rescue turned out to be a baby deer.

The rescue happened on May 27 in Madison Township after firefighters responded to a water rescue call in the 13000 block of North Mann Road, according to a Facebook post from the Madison Township Fire Department.

When crews arrived, they found a vehicle stranded in rising water with one occupant still inside. Officials said the driver was able to safely return to land without help from firefighters.

As responders were preparing to clear the scene, they heard another cry for help. A fawn was being carried downstream by rapidly rising floodwaters.

Fire Captain Joe Sinclair entered the water and rescued the animal, bringing it back to solid ground. Footage and photos shared by the department show Sinclair saving the deer in the rushing water, then cradling it after the rescue.

Medics at the scene cared for the deer until it could be transferred to a local wildlife rescue organisation, officials said.

“The last update we received was that the baby deer was doing very well, with plans for it to be released back into the wild near the area where the rescue occurred,” the fire department told PEOPLE on June 8.

The department also urged the public not to drive through flooded roads.

“Turn around, don’t drown,” the department said in its statement. “Water can be deeper and faster-moving than it appears,” officials added.
