What started as a call about a dog in trouble ended with officers climbing over lakefront rocks to pull him free.
Chicago Animal Care and Control said a beachgoer called for help on Monday after reporting a dog was trapped beneath large rocks on Lake Michigan near Rainbow Beach.
Two officers responded and found the dog “wedged between and underneath massive shoreline boulders approximately 30 feet from shore,” CACC said.
“Navigating the uneven rock pier and carefully making their way to the dog’s location, the officers were able to safely free him from the crevice,” the agency said in a release.
CACC said the resident who reported the trapped dog stayed at the scene to help the officers.
Despite the situation, the dog was “friendly, cooperative and happy to see his rescuers,” rescuers said.
The dog was taken to CACC and evaluated by medical staff, who said he needed no additional treatment and was in good health.
No microchip was found, and the facility said it is hoping to find the dog’s family, “or a new chapter.”
“This rescue is a reminder that our Field Services team responds to much more than stray animal calls. From emergency rescues along the lakefront to helping animals in difficult and dangerous situations, our officers are in the field every day serving both animals and residents across Chicago,” CACC said in a statement.
