A wrong turn at a front door changed Joe Symonds’ life.
The 87-year-old Vancouver, Washington, man has spent the past year and a half delivering DoorDash orders to help cover everyday expenses and pay for medication, according to KGW News. One recent delivery went off course when he arrived at the wrong house.
The home belonged to Alyona Dikiy, who was cleaning out her garage when she noticed Symonds seemed a little disoriented. After speaking with him for a few minutes, she learned he was still working long delivery shifts at 87.
“You couldn’t imagine that being your own grandpa or grandma doing that,” Dikiy told KGW News.
Symonds said he appreciated being able to work, but the job had become physically difficult. He said climbing stairs and handling deliveries had taken a toll, and he had suffered a few falls while working.
Dikiy gave him $100 and encouraged him to take the rest of the day off. With his permission, she later posted a short video online and started a GoFundMe campaign to help ease his financial burden and possibly let him retire.
At first, the fundraiser grew slowly.
“Once it was at $400, I was like, ‘Joe, we’re at like $400! You can take a couple days off!’” Dikiy recalled.
Then donations surged. Within days, the total climbed past $40,000, with contributions coming from people around the world.
“I think you’re the kindest, most fantastic people that I could imagine,” Symonds said. “I never thought there were people like that, people who would donate to a complete stranger they had never met.”
Dikiy said the response left her with a simple takeaway.
“I think that a lot of people have really good hearts,” she said.
Symonds believes the mix-up happened for a reason.
“She’s my angel,” he said.
