An 11-year-old in Kentucky saw a man unconscious at the bottom of a swimming pool and went in after him when, he says, nobody else did.
The rescue happened on Wednesday evening at an apartment complex pool in Lexington, where Avory Woolery noticed a man underwater.
“There was this man in the pool, like unconscious underwater, almost shaking, maybe, and my adrenaline kicked in,” Avory said.
As time passed, Avory said no one stepped in.
“No one was doing anything, so I put on my goggles. I went underwater,” he said. “I grabbed him up and I just felt really bad because there was no way that I was going to let another man die today. He’s a human being. He should be treated as such.”
Avory pulled the man to the surface and got him out of the water, according to the account. On the pool deck, the man’s friend started CPR and someone else called 911.
The Lexington Fire Department said the man was taken to hospital in serious condition.
Avory’s father, Sean Woolery, said he was proud of his son.
“I’m proud of him. Somebody, when I was walking up here, somebody said, ‘Thank you, you taught him how to swim,'” he said.
