This Town’s Santa Claus Just Donated His Kidney to Save a Neighbor in Need

Christmas came early in central Virginia, and this time Santa showed up with a kidney.

Dave Bell, known in Powhatan as the town’s go-to Santa Claus, recently donated a kidney to an anonymous recipient at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital.

Bell wore a Santa hat in his hospital bed during recovery.

“I have two of these things, and I only need one,” Bell said. “There’s somebody who has none and they need one.”

Bell has dressed up as Santa Claus for years, lighting up children’s faces with smiles in Powhatan.

To qualify as a donor, he had to lose 18 kilograms.

“Stories like Dave’s make organ donation feel real and personal,” Dr Amanda Bailey, transplant surgeon at the Virginia Transplant Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, told WTVR. “They show that donation is possible and that one person can make an enormous difference in someone else’s life.”
