Spider-Man Reaches $2 Billion at the Box Office, Joining One of Film History’s Rarest Clubs

Spider-Man has swung into rare company.

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has become only the eighth film in history to gross $2 billion worldwide. Sony said the Marvel film reached the mark in its third weekend after taking in another $70 million domestically and $118.7 million overseas, lifting its global total to $2.022 billion.

That makes “Brand New Day” the second-fastest film to reach $2 billion, behind 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

The film is also now the highest-grossing “Spider-Man” movie ever worldwide, passing the $1.9 billion total of 2021’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

“Brand New Day” is just the third film this decade to reach $2 billion worldwide, and the first American movie to hit the milestone in nearly four years. The only other $2 billion releases of the 2020s so far are the 2022 sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water” and the 2025 Chinese animated film “Ne Zha 2.”

Starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, “Brand New Day” has been setting records since opening in theatres on July 31. Holland’s fourth solo film as Peter Parker posted the biggest opening weekend in domestic box office history with $360 million, ahead of “Avengers: Endgame” at $357 million.

In its second weekend, “Brand New Day” added $144 million domestically. That was more than most other 2026 releases made in their first weekend, except for “Toy Story 5.”

It stayed at No. 1 again in its third weekend and finished ahead of the new Ewan McGregor and Anne Hathaway sci-fi thriller “The End of Oak Street,” which opened at No. 3 with $21 million, according to Rentrak.

At the domestic box office, “Brand New Day” now ranks as the fourth highest-grossing movie of all time with $785.8 million. It trails “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” “Avengers: Endgame” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

It is also the fastest film ever to reach $500 million in North American theatres, doing it in seven days.

If it passes $936 million in the coming weeks, “Brand New Day” would become the highest-grossing movie of all time in North America, overtaking the record set by 2015’s “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

According to Box Office Mojo, the only films in history to gross $2 billion worldwide, not adjusted for inflation, are “Avatar” at $2.92 billion, “Avengers: Endgame” at $2.8 billion, “Avatar: The Way of Water” at $2.33 billion, “Ne Zha 2” at $2.27 billion, “Titanic” at $2.26 billion, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” at $2.07 billion, “Avengers: Infinity War” at $2.05 billion and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” at $2.02 billion.
