A school art competition turned into a red carpet moment for Tommy from Blackpool.
Tommy won a contest to design the official British Board of Film Classification Black Card for Toy Story 5, which will appear at UK screenings of the film when it opens on Friday.
He was congratulated at a preview screening in London by the film’s stars, including Tom Hanks and Tim Allen.
“I was really shocked to win. I felt happy, excited, amazed, so many emotions all at once! I didn’t believe it at first,” Tommy said.
Tommy said he used acrylic paint and a mixture of brushes and sponges to create different textures.
“I just wanted to make something colourful, plus feet are easier to draw than faces!
“I can’t wait for my friends to see it in the cinema.”
His winning design features the feet of some of the Disney Pixar film’s characters, including new character Lilypad, played by Greta Lee.
The BBFC said Lilypad is a new tablet device that arrives “with her own disruptive ideas about what is best for their kid, Bonnie”.
A BBFC spokesperson said the latest instalment in the Toy Story series sees Woody, Buzz Lightyear and Jessie face their “biggest challenge yet”, in a place where, as Woody puts it, “Toys are for play, but tech is for everything”.
Greta Lee and Joan Cusack, who voices Jessie, announced Tommy’s winning design in a specially recorded video before he met the stars at the UK Toy Story 5 fan event in London.
On seeing the artwork, Cusack asked: “Did you draw that? That’s amazing!” Lee told Tommy to keep up the good work.
Approaching Tommy on the red carpet, Hanks said: “Hey little kid! What’s this?” before signing his framed copy of the design and adding: “Thanks for being here.”
Tommy, who was a finalist in last year’s competition, was later seen screaming in delight in a video from the event shared by the BBFC.
He also told Allen that Buzz was his favourite character, with Allen joking: “I want you to make sure that Tom hears that when he comes out here.”
Director Andrew Stanton told Tommy: “You really did your homework… we’ll have to hire you some day!”
Tommy’s signature appears on the official BBFC Black Card alongside those of BBFC president Natasha Kaplinsky and chief executive David Austin.
The competition attracted more than 1,000 entries from across the UK.
Tommy and his family were invited to London for a winner’s day experience, including a behind-the-scenes tour of the BBFC, where he learned how films are classified from a BBFC compliance officer.
The BBFC is the UK’s independent film and video regulator.
Natasha Kaplinsky said: “Tommy’s design absolutely captures the spirit of Toy Story 5, and we are excited to see it on the big screen this summer.
“The film’s theme of toys vs tech is particularly important as young people are navigating an online world that is more complex now than ever before.”
Charlotte Tudor, vice president of studios marketing Disney and Animation at The Walt Disney Company UK and EMEA, said: “We are so excited to see his artwork in cinemas across the UK this summer. Congratulations, Tommy!”
