Piece by piece, a lost Pompeii ceiling is coming back into view.
Archaeologists at Pompeii have partially reconstructed a rare ceiling fresco showing the mythological romance of Dionysus and Ariadne. The ceiling once sat inside the banquet hall on the upper floor of a home with an adjoining bakery in the ancient Roman city, which was preserved for centuries after the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E.
Since 2023, archaeologists have collected hundreds of plaster fragments from the elaborately decorated ceiling, which they think had a curved, vaulted shape. They recently built a support structure that copies the ceiling’s original form and started fitting the fragments together like a puzzle.
So far, they have reconstructed more than a quarter of the ceiling from about 1,000 fragments. They plan to keep adding pieces as more fragments are excavated and restored.
The Pompeii Archaeological Park presented the reconstructed ceiling last week during an international workshop on research activities in the ancient city, according to a July 24 statement from the park.
“Italy is a world leader in archaeological restoration, and Pompeii, with its team of restorers, plays a central role in that effort,” Gabriel Zuchtriegel, director of the Pompeii Archaeological Park, told the Italian news agency ANSA, as reported by Euronews’ Greta Ruffino. “That is why we are pleased to share the results of our conservation projects with the world, as they also provide opportunities for research and exchange.”
Researchers took time to work out what the fresco showed. According to the New York Times, they determined it depicts Dionysus, the god of revelry and wine, and Ariadne, the princess who helped Theseus kill the Cretan minotaur and escape the labyrinth.
Ceiling frescoes are rare at Pompeii. The New York Times reported that archaeologists have found only about 20, while wall frescoes are far more common. Pompeian ceilings were usually made from wood, lined with reeds and covered in plaster. In many cases, those organic materials decomposed.
Archaeologists had previously identified the building as a “bakery-prison.” They think enslaved people worked there in inhumane conditions, spending long hours with donkeys grinding grain in a cramped space with little light.
The structure is in Pompeii’s Regio IX area, where archaeologists also found a fresco featuring a pizza-like flatbread and an electoral campaign inscription.
The new reconstruction adds to other Dionysian finds at Pompeii. Last year, archaeologists found a series of large frescoes showing female followers of Dionysus taking part in secretive cult rituals inside the House of Thiasus, a residential complex dating to the first century B.C.E. Archaeologists think the home may have been topped by a 12.2 metre tower that was destroyed in the eruption.
