That viral “Puerto Rico song” now has an official music video, filmed across some of the island’s best-known tourist spots.
Discover Puerto Rico worked with the song’s creator, Bill Stiteler, also known as Saxboy Billy, on the new video and a singalong karaoke version.
Hundreds of thousands of social media users have used the viral sound in vacation clips, in Puerto Rico and elsewhere.
“I created the song because Puerto Rico is one of those places that leaves a lasting impression on people,” Stiteler said. “I never imagined it would resonate with so many people online, let alone lead to an opportunity to film an official music video across the island. It’s been incredible to see how people have embraced it.”
The karaoke version features a coquí frog, a symbol of Puerto Rico, guiding singers through the lyrics by hopping from word to word.
The song’s rise online has also drawn criticism. Stiteler wrote the lyrics, recorded himself singing them, then fed them into Suno, an AI music generator.
Artists including On Company Time and Straight No Chaser have since recorded their own “100 percent human” versions, and both have racked up hundreds of thousands of views as backlash against AI grows among social media users.
The official music video from Stiteler and Discover Puerto Rico uses the original AI-generated song.
Filming locations in the video include San Juan sites such as El Morro, Distrito T-Mobile and Toro Verde Urban Park, as well as downtown Caguas.
It also features Luquillo locations including Balneario La Monserrate, Terruño and the Kioskos de Luquillo, along with Las Croabas in Fajardo.
The clip also includes mofongo, made from fried green plantains, and the malt beverage Malta, both mentioned in the song.
Discover Puerto Rico released the video at the start of the summer season, alongside Piña Colada Month in July and Rum Month in August.
