Edith may not have booked the appointment herself, but the 29-year-old chimpanzee still got the full works.

Footage from Edinburgh Zoo shows vets giving Edith a health check-up, including a heart scan, as part of her care at the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland.

The female chimpanzee received a range of examinations while under anaesthetic. Vets also replaced her contraceptive implant, which the zoo said is used as part of responsible population management.

The heart ultrasound checked for signs of congenital heart disease, a condition chimpanzees can be vulnerable to, much like humans.

Good news for Edith: she was given the all-clear.

The zoo said the contraceptive implants used for chimpanzees are the same type used in humans.

After recovering from the anaesthetic, Edith returned to the 13 other chimpanzees living in Edinburgh Zoo’s Budongo Trail habitat.

The trail is designed to give the chimps space and variety. It includes a large outdoor area with climbing frames, along with indoor pods that recreate different parts of their native forest environment.

For Edith, it was a big day at the doctor.

For her keepers, it was another reminder that caring for chimpanzees can look a lot like caring for us.
