Utility Worker Rescues Toddler Moments Before He Runs Into Busy Traffic

A utility worker in downtown Phoenix spotted something odd on a sidewalk, then realised a toddler was running toward traffic.

On the afternoon of March 19, Arizona Public Service troubleshooter Robert Butler was driving along Grant Street when he saw a small wagon and an umbrella sitting on the sidewalk, according to FOX 10.

Then he saw a young child, believed to be about 3 years old, running up the sidewalk toward a busy intersection.

Butler said he did not hesitate.

“My heart dropped,” he recalled.

He pulled over, got out of his truck and ran toward the toddler, reaching him just before the child could step into traffic. The rescue was caught on camera.

Looking back, Butler told FOX 10 he still struggles to explain how the timing worked out.

“Thinking back on it now, I’m not sure if it was God or something was divine intervention,” Butler said. “I don’t know, but there was something that day that was off than normal that just put me at the right place or right time. I just think about when I get home and my son’s happy to see me. So just thinking that – that little boy can be happy to see his parents or whoever.”
