Hertfordshire Zoo has announced the birth of two black and rufous sengis, also known as elephant shrews, marking the first time the species has been successfully bred in the UK.
Footage from the zoo shows the tiny pups, who were born to parents Nuru and Mala in February.
The newborns weighed just 30 grams, the zoo said, and were so small that keepers only noticed they had been born during a review of CCTV footage.
“To welcome the first-ever sengi birth in the UK is incredibly special,” Hertfordshire Zoo’s managing director, Tyler Whitnall, said. “Seeing them breed so quickly is a real testament to the exceptional care provided by our team.”
