A wildfire crew in Colorado got an unlikely tagalong, a pet goat named Goldie.
Goldie, a 4-year-old Nigerian dwarf goat, appeared in a July 9 Facebook video as she walked alongside the Colorado Springs Fire Department while responders worked the Rock Creek Fire, according to People.
The department leaned into the moment in its caption, writing: “Every crew needs a good leader…apparently ours has four legs.”
It added that “firefighters got an unexpected escort from a very determined goat who led them toward the fire area and even helped with some fuel mitigation along the way.”
According to the Associated Press, Goldie stayed with the crew for hours, munching leaves as firefighters fought the fire and cleared vegetation. She then followed them back to the trucks and even went after one vehicle as it pulled away.
Officials later learned Goldie belonged to a nearby family and had returned home safely.
“GREAT NEWS!! This sweet little friend’s owners reached out to us. She is a family goat,” the department said, according to People.
In a July 11 update, the department posted a photo of Goldie with the caption, “Goldie would like everyone to know the Rock Creek Fire is 100 percent contained.”
The department also wrote: “We’re not saying she’s ready for a badge…but we’re also not saying she isn’t,” the Colorado Springs Fire Department wrote.
