A missing dog in Southaven, Mississippi, turned up in a place his family never would have expected, at the bottom of a sinkhole about 6 metres deep.
The three-legged dog had been gone for three days after getting out of the yard at about 7 p.m. on Saturday, according to his owner, Carla Chadwick. She said she did not know where he was or if he was safe.
WREG reported the dog was found about two blocks from home at Airways and Industrial Drive. A city worker checking the size of the sinkhole noticed him trapped below and contacted the Southaven animal shelter.
A veteran animal control officer then went to the scene and pulled the dog out.
After the rescue, the dog was reportedly doing well. He was muddy but otherwise fine, although it was unclear how long he had been stranded in the hole.
The sinkhole was estimated to be 20 feet deep, or about 6 metres. The rescue started during a routine city inspection, when the worker spotted the dog in the hole.
